The
Aeneid Rome KaMOO involves an abridged, digital
version of Virgil’s
Aeneid,
written at a 6-7th grade reading level. It provides
online teacher handouts and support, including lessons
and student handouts. After students read and study
the abridged version of the Aeneid, students
then take on the role of a character in the Aeneid,
interacting with other class members in a virtual
world/MOO environment, similar to an RPG, utilizing
a text-based rather than a graphics-based interface.
The more students understand the story and characters
in the Aeneid, the better they will fare
in the virtual world. This Aeneid unit formed
the research basis for Mrs. Sontag's doctoral
dissertation
in instruction design for online
learning. |
The
project aligns with California Language Arts and Social
Studies content standards, specifically Language Arts
6th grade content standard 3.0 Literary Response and
Analysis:
Students read and respond to historically or culturally
significant
works of literature that reflect and enhance their
studies of history and social science. They clarify
the ideas and connect them to other literary works
(California State Board of Education, 1997).

Points of View
This unit presents primary source information about the Native
Americans and settlers' fights over land in California during
the Gold Rush in the 1850's. The unit fosters critical thinking,
and provides students with an opportunity for Project-Based-Learning,
as students create a 3D animated world using the free program,
Alice. Both teachers and students learn the Alice program as they
work through the tutorial provided in the lesson unit. Includes
rubrics to grade both the social studies as well as the language
arts lessons included in this unit.
